WASHINGTON, D.C. (KTVF) On Monday, Alaska Congressman Don Young announced that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has awarded over $2 million in funding to various Alaska Native organizations. In addition to general health care grant funding, the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium was awarded a grant under the CDC’s Racial and Ethnic Approaches to Community Health (REACH) Program. The REACH Program is the only federal program explicitly focused on reducing chronic diseases for multiple racial and ethnic groups in communities with high rates of chronic illness. REACH promotes healthy behaviors and disease management training among five racial and ethnic groups: African Americans, American Indians/Alaska Natives, Hispanics, Asian Americans, and Native Hawaiians/Other Pacific Islanders.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has touched every area of our daily lives, and has impacted families across our state, including those in our Native communities,” said Congressman Don Young. “Alaska Natives, whether they live in remote corners of the state or in downtown Anchorage, are all too familiar with public health emergencies. We must ensure that our villages are empowered with the resources necessary to weather the storm of COVID-19. The funding announced by HHS is welcome news for the countless individuals and families who have come to rely on the high-quality health care and health education delivered by Alaska Native health organizations and other tribal consortia. I am grateful to Secretary Alex Azar and the Trump Administration for identifying the need for healthcare funding in our state. In Congress, I will always stand up for our Native communities, and I know that by working together, they will come out the other side of this stronger than ever.”
