PET OF THE WEEK: Meet Misty, a 1-year old domesticated Pigeon
FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) -
This feathery friend is staging a “coop” of today’s segment! Only this one may surprise you. As we establish whether or not News 13′s Pet of the Week is “for the birds”, we meet a pigeon named Misty!
Here’s what Sarah Harman, Animal Tender with Fairbanks North Star Borough Animal Shelter, had to say:
“Hi, I’m Sarah, I’m here at the Fairbanks North Star Borough Animal Shelter with our Pet of the Week. This week we have Misty. We don’t know if Misty is a male or female, but they are a domesticated pigeon. They came to us as a stray, but they do have two leg bands on so that we know she—or him are a domesticated pigeon. She is looking for a home with an already established domestic flock. Here, she needs plenty of room to fly, and a predator-proof pigeon flight pen. Misty would not thrive in an indoor enclosure, and appears to be very flighty around humans. It is possible, however, to slowly tame pigeons, but it takes a lot of time and patience. But if you have that, they do have the potential to make wonderful indoor pets. If Misty is not the one for you, we have lots of other animals available, including cats, dogs, and other small animals. So come on by, and see if you can’t find yourself a new friend.”
