FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) -

Alaska Legislator Gary Knopp has died in a mid-air plane collision.

Our sister station KTUU confirmed this information from a press release from Alaska House Majority Communications Director Austin Baird.

The crash closed an area near mile 91.5 of the Sterling Highway, which has been reopened, KTUU also reports.

AP reports that in a statement, the Federal Aviation Administration said, “A single-engine de Havilland DHC-2 Beaver and a twin-engine Piper Aztec collided in mid-air approximately 2 miles northeast of Soldotna Airport.”

Maria Downey with KTUU confirmed that Knopp’s family has been notified.

We will update this article as we receive more information.
