Training camp opened this week for the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District as the Lathrop Malemutes prepare for the 2020 season. After months of speculation that Fall activities would be cancelled in Alaska, FNSBSD said that sports will happen.

Lathrop opened their camp with new faces in important positions on the field. They graduated quarterback Jace Henry, who dominated last season en route to being named the Alaska Gatorade Player of the Year for football and will now hand the keys off to Jarren Littell to lead the offense

“It’s definitely a big role, but I feel like we have been working together as a team,” said Littell. “I can depend on my teammates and my teammates can depend on me.”

Lathrop, along with the rest of the football teams in the interior, are able to hold camps with the coronavirus looming over them. In what was supposed to be an off-season where the Malemutes prepared for their 2020 season, they instead waited with bated breath to see if sports would happen.

“Man we’re excited to be here you know,” said Head Coach Luke Balash. “What a great opportunity to just come out and play and be together. It’s obviously very different then kind of our normal structure for this time of year. We’re just thankful to be here.”

The season is set to start August 20 in line with the borough’s plan for school this Fall.
