Pet of the Week: Meet Chili the Chinchilla
FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - Meet Chili the chinchilla, just chin-chillin down at the North Star Borough Animal Shelter.
Here’s what Kimberly Imbert, Animal Shelter Operations Supervisor with Fairbanks North Star Borough Animal Shelter, had to say:
“Hi I’m Kimberly and this week’s Pet of the Week is Chili. Chili is an 8-year-old chinchilla who was brought to the shelter because his owners were having problems.
He’s really outgoing and he is a little bit of an older chinchilla but he’s really healthy and active and still has several more years of life left if he’s kept healthy.
Chinchillas are really unique creatures, their fur requires that they get a dust bath to keep the quality of their fur really healthy. The oils on our hands damage their fur, and they also can’t get water baths. So they do like to get a dust-bath once a day but you don’t want them in there all the time.
Chinchillas eat a lot of hay, and they require pellets, and clean water, things to chew on and jump on. What’s really neat about them is they don’t have nails so you don’t have to worry about trimming their nails.
They can be handled quite a bit but they are more of a pet that you wouldn’t cuddle so much as interact with, feed them treats, watch them play and be really active. So it’s not like a stuffed animal that you’re gonna cuddle a lot but you definitely can interact with him and enjoy his cute little quirky personality.
Chinchillas require special care and Chili is hoping to find a responsible owner that’s ready to meet his needs. He is one of many other small animal friends, and dog and cat friends looking for loving homes as well.”
