FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - Movie theater Regal Goldstream and IMAX reopened its doors on Friday, August 21st. It is currently playing both recent and classic movies.

Some moviegoers were eager to see classic movies on the big screen. “Seeing a movie on a big screen is way different than seeing it on a home-video system,” filmgoer Mark Chapin said.

Chapin came to see the 1992 Clint Eastwood western Unforgiven. Chapin said he was the only patron at his showing, and plans to see The Empire Strikes Back, The Goonies and Back to the Future later this week. “”The movie industry has suffered a lot with the virus, and I want to do my part to keep our local movie theater open,” he said.

Another filmgoer, Travis Cole, came to the theater to see what was playing and what their procedures were.”I’ve read what they have on the app and it sounds like they’ve taken a lot of good measures,” Cole said.

“I’m a single parent. I don’t go out or do anything else, besides, like, we go to the movies a lot. And since this pandemic started, the movies has been closed. And so my kids are kind of bored with what’s on TV now because they’ve seen everything that’s on TV. They’re really excited to see the movies reopen.” Cole wants to introduce his son to “The Goonies.”

According to Regal’s website, precautions are being taken because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Where mandated, employees are doing daily health screenings including temperature checks, are required to wash their hands every 30 to 60 minutes, and must wear masks.

Social distancing is being maintained by opening every other register and closing self-service stands for condiments, among other measures.

Where state and county mandate require it, the capacity of auditoriums is being reduced to 50 percent. Meanwhile, when a theater reserves seats, two seats are being put in between groups.

Face masks are required of guests and inside auditoriums, which are monitored by employees. These masks can only be removed when eating and drinking.
