Fairbanks thunderstorm record poised to be broken
FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - 2020 could prove to be a record breaking year for the National Weather service in Fairbanks. In 1988 the record for thunderstorms reported by the Fairbanks International Airport was set at 18. Now it’s been a stormy summer in fairbanks, and as of August 2020, the number of storm reports matches that record setting year. Ed Plumb, Warning Coordination Meteorologist with the National Weather Service had this to say.
“As most people here in Fairbanks probably realize we’ve had a lot of thunderstorms roll through town this year. Yeah that is correct, as of today we had a thunderstorm come through last night on Sunday evening, and that put us at 18 thunderstorms reported at the airport. And so if we get one more this year we’ll break the record for the number of thunderstorms reported at the airport this summer.”
Plumb went on to say, “The normal for an entire summer at the Fairbanks airport is about 9 days with thunderstorms. So right now we’re double that for this year so far, and like I said we’re one day away from breaking the record for thunderstorms reported at the airport.”
The National Weather Service reports Fairbanks only has a 3% chance of another thunderstorm potentially breaking this record, but here in the tail end of august there’s still time.
