Fairbanks man shot in chest, suspect in custody
FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - On Wednesday, August 26th, at approximately 3:31a.m., Fairbanks Emergency Communication Center received a call from a witness who stated that his brother had just been shot at close range by an acquaintance in a residence at 2425 Mercier Street. Fairbanks Police Officers responded to the residence and made contact with the victim and witnesses.
The victim was still conscious when officers arrived and told officers that Russell Norman Carroll, 37, of Fairbanks, had shot him. The victim was transported to Fairbanks Memorial Hospital by Fairbanks Fire Department EMS for a gunshot wound to his chest.
FPD Officers began searching the area for the suspect, who had fled prior to their arrival. Officers located Carroll and took him into custody at 3:52 a.m. at the intersection of 27th Avenue and Cowles Street.
The victim told FPD detectives prior to going into surgery that he was sleeping in his bedroom and was awoken by Carroll yelling in the living room. He then stated that he entered the living room and was shot by Carroll. The victim’s teenage son also witnessed the shooting and identified Carroll as the shooter.
Carroll has been charged with Assault in the First Degree.
The victim is expected to make a full recovery.
