FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - In a statement released by the City of Fairbanks on Thursday, Mayor Jim Matherly has decided to veto resolution No. 4932 which would allocate up to $749,000 to the nonprofit, Explore Fairbanks. One of the reasons for vetoing the resolution that was passed by a vote of 4-2 at Monday night’s City Council meeting was regarding the fairness of the process. Matherly said, “I concur with the recommendation of the CARES ACT Fund Committee that a direct grant to Explore Fairbanks is fundamentally unfair to other businesses and nonprofits and that implementation of phase II of the funding distribution will address the needs of businesses and nonprofits in a more equitable manner.”

The Fairbanks City Council will meet on August 31, 2020 to discuss overriding the veto. Explore Fairbanks can still apply under phase II of the City’s program, and the $100,000 limit has been removed for phase II.
