North Pole, Eielson advised to cancel football games as two players exhibit COVID-19 symptoms
FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) -
On Wednesday, the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District advised North Pole and Eielson High Schools to cancel their football games this weekend as a precautionary measure. The school district was made aware that two North Pole players were exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19, which include fever, new cough, new trouble breathing or shortness of breath, among other symptoms.
The Eielson Ravens visited North Pole on Friday, August 21 for the first high school football game in Interior, Alaska.
The affected student-athletes are in isolation and have been encouraged to reach out to their healthcare providers.
Eielson was scheduled to travel to Valdez this weekend for a game, while North Pole was set to host Homer. Both games have officially been canceled.
North Pole is not practicing until told otherwise. Eielson may continue practice under ASAA’s “high risk practice protocols”, which include no contact drills and social distancing increased from six to 10 feet.
On Monday, FNSBSD announced that a player involved in Saturday’s football game between Lathrop and West Valley High Schools had tested positive for COVID-19.
Players, coaches and other individuals involved in that game are currently undergoing a 14-day quarantine. No Interior football programs will be in action this week with Lathrop, West Valley, North Pole and Eielson all sidelined and the Monroe Rams having a bye week.
