FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - According to a press release from Assistant Superintendent Luke Meinert, sporting events and activities will continue in the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District despite currently being in the Red Zone.

This change is predicated by an update in the guidelines issued by the Alaska School Activities Association (ASAA). The format of the new guidelines are based on the development and adherence to mitigation plans rather than community risk levels.

“This puts responsibility on all of us to ensure we are continuing to follow, implement, and adhere to all mitigation efforts. If anyone is exhibiting symptoms they must stay home,” said Meinert.

According to the updated guidelines issued by the school district, while in the Red Zone all games will be played at district or borough facilities, there will be no travel of teams, no concessions, no locker rooms, and participants must come dressed to participate and leave to shower and change.

The only exception for team travel will be on a case by case basis for travel related to state level competitions.

Spectators will be allowed for outdoor activities only and will be limited based on the facility’s capacity with six feet of social distancing between spectators. Spectators must also wear masks during attendance and will be screened before entry.

No spectators will be allowed for indoor activities.

If the borough goes back into the Yellow Zone changes to these guidelines would include the ability for teams to travel with prior approval, locker rooms may be used if social distancing is being practiced, and spectators would be allowed for indoor activities; with masks being worn and 12 foot social distancing protocols being practiced.

Teams with a positive test will be quarantined until notified by public health and venues with a positive case will be closed for 72 hours.
