Man who lived in Fairbanks charged with 15 counts of sexually abusing a minor
FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - Danny Sowers, 36, allegedly engaged in sexual acts with a 5-year-old victim starting in 2013. According to charging documents, the abuse continued for two years until 2015. Sowers lived on Fort Wainwright, where he was a soldier when the alleged abuse began taking place. According to Alaska State Trooper Investigator Al Bell, Sowers was dishonorably discharged from the Army for a different incident and moved out of military housing, but the abuse continued.
The victim, who was five in 2013, was taken to the hospital 14 times during the period of abuse due to genital complications, including injuries and infections. According to Bell, medical staff at Basset Army Hospital performed a CT scan on the victim in November of 2013 and found a foreign object in her vagina. Bell said the staff reported to the Office of Children’s Services that they believed the girl was being sexually abused. According to Bell, OCS never conveyed this information to law enforcement.
The victim, now 12, recently told a therapist that she was abused. The therapist again reported to OCS the alleged abuse. The victim’s younger brother said in an interview with OCS in July of 2019 that he had witnessed his sister being raped by Danny Sowers and that he tried to stop it but was afraid and hid in a closet. The victim’s mother also allegedly saw the victim and Sowers in a room naked together but never saw any abuse taking place. According to charging documents, the victim said that Sowers had, “told her not to tell anyone and she added that [Sowers] would spank her when she told secrets, so she was afraid to tell anyone, and it stuck with her not to tell.”
Sowers moved to Texas where he currently resides. Bell said that they are seeking a warrant from a judge to be able to arrest Sowers and bring him to Fairbanks to face justice. According to Court View, Sowers has two outstanding warrants for unrelated incidents.
Sowers is being charged with five counts of sexual abuse of a minor in the first degree and 10 counts of sexual abuse of a minor in the second degree.
