FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) -Peter Charles Edwin was sentenced to 50 years behind bars Friday for 2nd degree sexual abuse in 2017 of a minor under the age of 13.

This is Edwin’s 3rd felony conviction of a serious nature. Because of that he was facing 99 years imprisonment under Alaska’s law.

In the courtroom full of masked participants, Superior Court Judge Michael MacDonald shortened the 99 year incarceration, stating the case was of serious nature -- but due to the limited duration of the crime, the nature of the conduct, the lack of any aggression, the lack of any duress, and the absence of any position of trust, a 50 year sentence was handed out.

But Judge MacDonald also said there was still a need for isolation so this doesn’t happen again. “It is unlikely that the three children who are the targets of these criminal prosecutions are the only children that Mr. Edwin ever took sexual advantage of, and that he got caught every time. It’s just not likely how it is. That’s not before the court today, and we won’t consider that -- but the fact of the matter is, as soon as Mr. Edwin gets out of custody, he commits a new offense. That’s the history. So there is a need to isolate Mr. Edwin from society to prevent this criminal conduct from occurring again”

Even with the 50 year flat sentence, it’s unlikely that 53 year old Edwin will ever be released from prison.

Peter Edwin’s mother asked to speak at the sentencing.

“I wanted to tell the court, when my three kids were little, Peter was two years old at the time, and I was a drunk. When I started drinking I got anybody to babysit, just so somebody was there, but not me, I walked or took a path downtown,” Edwin’s mother said. “Just stayed down there for days at a time and I knew this had a big effect on how the kids turned out, but wild horses couldn’t keep me away from that bar. When I was drinking, the kids, all three of them were alone, they were on their own.”

Edwin has a criminal history included a conviction for a 1995 attempted crime and a 2001 attempted sexual abuse of minor.
