FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - The North Pole Patriots flag football team made history on September 24 by taking down the West Valley Wolfpack for the first time in program history. Playing in their third game in three days, the Patriots rode their defense to a 13-6 victory.

“There’s something special about this group of girls,” said North Pole Head Coach Mat Croan. “Man, they got a lot of fight in them.”

The Patriots were led by Alicia Guzman who used her speed to burn the defense on two touchdowns. The sophomore caught two touchdowns off passes from fellow sophomore Madison Kurzenberger on trick plays that caught the Wolfpack off guard. West Valley had their shots in this game behind the stellar arm of senior Tessa Lindberg who found freshman Kameron Bartlett on deep passes, including one that gave the Wolfpack their only touchdown.

“I’m an extremely proud coach right now,” said Mat Croan. “I am grateful to be apart of that.”

As explosive as the offense played, it was the defense that came out on top in the end. North Pole was able to earn redemption after giving up a game winner to West Valley on September 17 by holding the Wolfpack to zero points in the second half.

North Pole gets a much needed rest after playing three straight days and will take on the Hutchison Hawks on October 1 while the Wolfpack take on the Lathrop Malemutes on September 29.

This was a battle between two undefeated programs and conference rivals, as the North Pole Patriots took on the Lathrop Malemutes. North Pole and Lathrop went back and forth in this five set thriller but the Patriots came out on top (25-11, 10-25, 25-18, 20-25, 15-6) taking the fifth set 15-6.

Ainsley Smith led North Pole with 28 assists while Kinley Erickson chipped in 12 kills. The senior pair was enough to get North Pole over their conference foes.

North Pole will now take on the West Valley Wolfpack on October 6 while the Malemutes take on the Monroe Catholic Rams on September 29.

The Monroe Catholic Rams were staring down a 0-2 hole against the West Valley Wolfpack, but through determination the Rams rode their defense to a reverse sweep winning 3-2 (16-25, 17-25, 25-19, 25-22, 15-11).

Delaney Ott led Monroe with 25 digs while the team combined for 12 blocks.

Monroe faces Lathrop on September 29 while West Valley takes on the Hutchison Hawks on September 30.
