Region VI tennis tournament dominated by Lathrop High School
FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - Region VI tennis tournament action went underway this weekend with positions in the Alaska state championships on the line. The Lathrop Malemutes had a dominating showing at the Dan Ramras Courts taking four of the five events.
In the boys singles championship match, Lathrop’s top ace in Luke Millam found himself in a dogfight with West Valley’s Axton Siekmann. It was back in forth in the first set with both sides putting on a show on a cold afternoon. Millam however found his stride to earn the sweep over Siekmann. In the girls singles, Lathrop’s Helen Wharton was up to her old tricks getting the sweep over West Valley’s Astrid Anderson. Wharton is now off to her fourth straight appearance in the state tournament.
The girls doubles was won by Lathrop as Tifani Hollcraft and Hannah Knott took down Monroe’s Jeannie Cook and Lauren White. In the boys doubles, the purple and gold picked up their fourth title after Gage Hale and Owen Averett earned a gritty sweep over the top seed West Valley team of Aidan Payan and Kade Rowland.
West Valley did get their revenge in the mixed doubles as Cole Neal and Klara Kondrake took the title after only being a duo for less than a week by sweeping Monroe’s Erin Hendricks and Oliver Pender.
The winner of each event advances to the state championships. The Alaska state championships are set for October 10 in Anchorage, Alaska.
