FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) -

Teammates since 7th grade, North Pole seniors Kinley Erickson and Ainsley Smith have plans to continue their volleyball careers together. Over the weekend, the Patriot pair announced their commitments to remain in the area and compete for the University of Alaska Fairbanks, while furthering their educations.

As the lone seniors on the North Pole roster, Smith and Erickson have led the Patriots to an undefeated record so far this season. Erickson regularly leads the team in kills, many of them coming off of setups by Smith. Last week, North Pole defeated previously unbeaten Lathrop in a five-set thriller, where Erickson had 12 kills and Smith tallied 28 assists.

In the 2019 season, the duo navigated the Patriots to their first Alaska State Tournament appearance since 1989, when they swept the Mid Alaska Conference. Their commitments will become official when they sign their National Letters of Intent later this year.

The tandem will join head coach Brian Scott’s roster for the 2021 campaign after completing their senior season, which is scheduled to conclude in November. The Nanooks went 15-13 last season, their most wins in a single year since 2008.
