FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) -

As Fairbanks residents take advantage of the favorable fall weather, here is what is going on around the area for Saturday.

Golden Heart Trail Run

The Golden Heart Trail Run 2.0 will take place Saturday, after hosting a virtual version earlier this summer. This edition will be in person, with COVID-19 safety measures, beginning at 10 a.m. at the Birch Hill Recreation Area. The event is sponsored by the Nordic Ski Club of Fairbanks and will offer 1-kilometer (ages 7 and under), 2.5K (8-14) and 5K courses for the community, high school and elite runners of the area. There will be 25 runners per wave for the youth and 50 for ages 15 and older. You can register for the 13th annual Golden Heart Trail run here.

Flag Football

In a rare Saturday flag football contest, the Hutchison Hawks will host the North Pole Patriots at 10 a.m. at the FYSA Turf Fields. This game is taking place as teams look to make up for missed games earlier in the year when the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District discontinued competition. Just weeks prior to the season, North Pole was uncertain whether they would have enough players to field a team. With enough athletes, the Patriots have impressed on gridiron, defeating West Valley for the first time in program history earlier this year.

Yukon Quest

Musher sign up day for the Yukon Quest’s Summit Quest 300 race is Saturday at the Fox Community Center. This will be the only race offered by the Yukon Quest in 2021, after the Canadian-side canceled their race. The event begins at 3 p.m. and is also a volunteer appreciation party, as well as the Yukon Quest’s birthday celebration. Masks are required.

Rifle

West Valley will begin their rifle season on Saturday at 10 a.m. at TVSA. It is a tri-match featuring Delta, Valdez and the Wolfpack. West Valley will be the lone school shooting at TVSA, while Delta and Valdez will shoot ‘postal’, by competing at their own location and sending in their scores virtually.
