FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) -Short of Mickey Mouse himself, one of these mice could be your new favorite mouse!

Here’s what Kimberly Imbert, Animal Shelter Operations Supervisor with Fairbanks North Star Borough Animal Shelter, had to say in our Pet of the Week feature:

“Hi I’m Kimberly and this weeks Pets of the Week are a bunch of mice who came to us looking for new homes. We have male and female mice, about 12 of them.”

“And they would love to be divided up so that they can get the attention they deserve in their new homes. Mice are excellent pets if you do not enjoy being cold and going outside for exercise like you would have to with a dog. They’re also great if you don’t have a lot of space for a pet, or if you just want something that doesn’t need as much movement from you to accommodate their needs.”

“They don’t need their cages cleaned too frequently. They do just fine having their cage cleaned once a week, and having their food and water refilled daily. They do like to have toys, chew toys, and some treats in their enclosures, a place to hide, [and] a wheel to exercise on. If you can make their enclosure even more exciting with ramps and tunnels they enjoy that as well. And it can be really fun for you to decorate their enclosure and make it different and fun for both of you. More fun to observe and more fun for them to live in.”

“Mice make excellent pets actually. If they get enough attention they are really friendly and they don’t take up very much space. They’re really happy with a small amount of space in your home, which is huge for them. A 20 gallon tank is a great amount of space for a mouse.”

“They’re really personable pets, [and] as long as you have enough time to give them a little attention every day they’ll be wonderful little companions for your family.”

“The mice have other dog and cat friends as well as a turtle friend looking for a loving home [too].”
