High School Tennis season wraps up with State Tournament
FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) -
Eight tennis players from the Fairbanks-area competed in the 2020 ASAA State Tennis Tournament over the weekend at the East Anchorage Alaska Club.
Lathrop’s Luke Millam claimed 2nd place in the boys singles event after finishing 5th in last year’s tournament. Millam defeated Dimond’s Andrew Teasley 5-4, 4-2, before meeting West Anchorage’s Charlie Rush in the semifinals. After falling to Rush, Millam defeated Teasley again to advance to the championship bout for a rematch with Rush. Rush defeated Milliam 6-4, 6-1 to take the State Championship.
Also representing Lathrop, Helen Wharton in the girls singles event. Wharton opened the tournament with a 4-0, 4-0 victory over Palmer’s Zoe Patton-Meyer, where she met the eventually winner, Athen Clendaniel of West Anchorage, in the semis. Wharton fell 6-1, 6-1, but climbed her way back to the third place match against West Anchorage’s Sophia Green. Wharton took down Green 4-1, 4-2 to take 3rdplace overall in the girls singles event.
The Region VI boys doubles champions Owen Averett and Gage Hale, of Lathrop, placed 4th at the State Tournament. As for the girls doubles, Lathrop’s Tifinni Holcraft and Hannah Knott battled their way to a 3rd place finish, defeating Dimond’s duo to take bronze.
West Valley’s Cole Neal and Klara Kondrak, of mixed doubles, opened the tournament with a loss, but bounced back. The pair defeated a duo from Colony High School 4-0, 4-2 before taking down a South team 1-4, 5-3, 10-3 tiebreaker to advance to the championship match. Neal and Kondrak lost 6-3, 6-3 to West Anchorage to finished 2nd in the state tournament.
