Man arrested after car chase and shootout near Glennallen
FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) -Alaska State Troopers have arrested a man they say shot at them after a vehicle chase near Gakona.
Shortly after 1 p.m. Saturday, AST took Mark Emery Heinz into custody without incident near mile 131 of the Richardson Highway.
According to the dispatch, Troopers received a report Friday morning that a vehicle almost caused a collision near the intersection of Gakona Lodge Road and East Tok Cut-Off Highway.
A Trooper located the vehicle about two miles east of Tok Cut-Off Highway and initiated a traffic stop.
Heinz allegedly failed to yield and attempted to flee. During the chase, the Trooper reported Heinz shot at them and they returned fire, but Heinz continued to flee. A short time later, AST says Heinz abandoned his vehicle and ran into the woods near Mile 149 Richardson Highway.
Members of the Southcentral, Northern, and Southern Special Emergency Reaction Teams responded, along with Helo-3, members of the Alaska Bureau of Investigation, and ‘B’ and ‘D’ Detachments' General Investigation Units.
AST also received operational and technical assistance from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, National Parks Service, and Village Public Safety Officer Program.
Heinz is being transported to a local medical facility for medical clearance prior to being transported to Mat Su Pretrial Facility.
