UAF volleyball get back to full team practices in the Patty Center

FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - After having to practice in small groups, the Alaska Nanooks volleyball program is back to full team training at the Patty Center.

“It’s been great, ” said Head Coach Brian Scott. “It’s been a lot of fun just to be in practice and competing and working hard again. It almost feels normal.”

The Nanooks welcome in five new student-athletes to the program with two freshmen and three transfers. The two freshmen include Miya Ohms and Rilee White. Ohms is an outside hitter from Taichung, Taiwan who played for Morrison Academy. She also recorded 392 kills her senior season and led Morrison to three Asia Christian Schools Conference championships. White is a pin hitter from Goodyear, Arizona that played for Odyssey High School last season. During her high school career she totaled 1,491 kills, 1,012 digs and 91 blocks.

“Rilee will, she is going to surprise some teams and she’s definitely going to have an impact on offense and another kid that’s just scrappy on defense.” said Coach Scott.

The three transfers include Danielle Dodge, Marine Angely and Aaliyah Muhammad. Dodge is a libero who comes to the Nooks after spending time with Coffeyville Community College in Kansas. She was part of their 2018 championship in the National Junior College Athletic Association. Angely comes over to the Nanooks after playing for Florida State College at Jacksonville. The outside hitter from Sivry, France had 279 kills last season. Muhammad is a middle blocker from Los Angeles, California who played for the College of Desert. Muhammad had 163 kills, 71 digs and 70 blocks last season.

“Dani Dodge is a phenomenal libero," said Coach Scott. “We’ve definitely gotten better in regards to our serve receives and regards to our defense.”

The volleyball season was cancelled by the National Collegiate Athletic Association, however the Great Northwest Athletic Conference have intentions to hold a conference schedule starting in January. The NCAA also announced that Fall student-athletes will receive another season of eligibility due to the cancellations.
