FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - Marina Gonzales Mazo is a unique signing for the Alaska Nanooks rifle program. She is the first rifle athlete from Spain to receive a rifle scholarship to the United States, serving as a role model for others like her.

“Oh I was crying, I cried a lot, my mom was crying," said Mazo when she received a scholarship from the University of Alaska Fairbanks. "I was so happy because I was going to be able to be up here in Alaska. It was like a dream and now I’m living the dream and I’m really feeling it.”

The Alaska Nanooks rifle program has a storied past with numerous All-Americans and national championships. They can now add international recruiters to their names, bringing Mazo who used to shoot for the Spanish National team. Mazo’s experience goes back to when she was eight and has been involved with the sport competing on the international scene.

“I’m looking forward to do my best and to travel the U.S.A,” said Mazo on what she looks forward to when the season starts. “I want to see the states and have fun and meet the other teams.”

Mazo and the Nanooks now await for the 2020-2021 Patriot Conference season which has been altered by the COVID-19 global pandemic.
