FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - Meet Ralph and Carhartt, two shy, older huskies looking for a new loving home. Here’s what Kimberly Imbert, Animal Shelter Operations Supervisor with Fairbanks North Star Borough Animal Shelter, had to say about our Pet of the Week:

"This week’s pets of the week are Ralph and Carhart, they are two dogs that are twelve years old they’re really bonded to each other so we are trying to find a home for them together. Ralph and Carhart are from Togo lines and that was one of the famous lead dogs that did the diphtheria run to Nome.

They are mushing trained but at this time are older and over weight, so they’re not in shape to be doing any mushing at the moment. Ralph and Carhart are accustomed to living outdoors but not on a chain. They do really good with doggy doors and really like to just be out in a play pen and then spend some time with their people in the evening.

They unfortunately came to the shelter because of a death in the family and the family was having a difficult time. Ralph and Carhart are a little shy, and they’re not the best with strangers. They just aren’t sure about new people, so they’ll need some time to bond with their family but once they do bond I’m sure they are going to be just really great additions to the family as long as you want something that likes to be outdoors a lot of the time and inside with you sometimes.

They have excellent coats, they are overweight and will need a diet and exercise. They can’t go to a home with small children because they just don’t like them very much and they’ve never been around cats. So we’re making sure they don’t go to a home with cats because we don’t want them to think that cats are something other than friends.

Ralph and Carhart are house broken, they’re used to using a doggy door. And so with a perfect set up, a fenced in yard with a doggy door, they will be excellent additions to a loving family that’s ready for these two old boys to give them a retirement home. Ralph and Carhart have other dog, cat, and small animal friends looking for loving homes as well."
