Fairbanks MACS Transit moving three bus routes to on demand service
FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - The Fairbanks North Star Borough MACS Transit announced Wednesday that the Grey, Yellow, and Orange bus lines will be moving to on-demand service temporarily.
The borough announced that because of low staff due to COVID, the Grey, Yellow, and Orange bus lines will be making the temporary change.
“We are currently experiencing limited staffing due to COVID 19 -- so in order to be proactive and try to make sure we can still service as many of our patrons as possible, we are moving three of our routes to an on-demand service temporarily,” said Michelle Denton, Transportation Director for the Fairbanks North Star Borough.
On-demand service requires that residents call the MACS Transit main number at (907) 459-1011 and schedule a pick-up for one of the routes being place on-demand.
“We’re still working out the logistics on that, but I would say as soon you know you would need a ride, you would want to give us a call so we can try to schedule it for you,” said Denton.
The change is only temporary and normal route services are planned to resume after a few weeks.
“My goal is that we’re doing this for less than two weeks. We’re trying to do our best to make sure we continue to serve everybody, which is the goal of doing on-demand instead of canceling routes all together,” said Denton.
