FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - The Fairbanks North Star Borough suspended services on Monday, November 9th due to an anticipated winter storm.

In a press release on Sunday, November 8th, Lanien Livingston, Public Information Officer with the borough, wrote, “A strong winter storm has brought freezing rain and heavy snow into the interior, resulting in extremely hazardous driving conditions.”

Among the services suspended were MACS Transit, which runs the bus lines, and Van Tran.

Michelle Denton, the borough’s Transportation Director, said, "The amount of snow that came in and then the changing temperatures caused us to cancel Saturday service and then early Friday, so then the Mayor’s office was closely monitoring the weather for today, and with the freezing rain the decision was made to cancel the service, both services for MACS Transit and Van Tran.

“I’ve been with the borough Transportation Department for over four years, and this is the first time we’ve ever actually shut service down altogether,” Denton explained, adding, “This is a very rare occurrence for us.”
