North Pole volleyball sweeps West Valley on Senior Night
FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - The matchup between the North Pole Patriots and the West Valley Wolfpack served as the final volleyball game of the 2020 season in Region VI. It was senior night for North Pole as they celebrated Ainsley Smith and Kinley Erickson.
North Pole won a close one against the Wolfpack as West Valley put the pressure on in this match between two Mid-Alaska Conference foes. The senior duo of Smith and Erickson once propelled the Patriots to another MAC-victory as Smith had 19 assists while Erickson chipped in six kills and seven aces.
“It’s been great, i really appreciate everything I’ve gone through,” said Smith about her time playing for North Pole. “Having to play with the girls since seventh grade is really special cause not a lot of places you can do it.”
The final standings for the MAC conference ends with the Patriots taking first, second went to the Lathrop Malemutes and third went to West Valley. Last year, the Patriots made waves on the volleyball scene after taking the MAC crown in 2019, which gave them their first state title appearance since 1989. However, the senior duo’s time together on the court won’t end here, as both will be suiting for the Alaska Nanooks. The tandem committed earlier this year, keeping their talents in the area and playing college ball at the University of Alaska Fairbanks Patty Center.
“It’s funny, because you finish your last game here, I’m going to cry,” said Erickson about stepping onto the North Pole High School court for the final time in prep career. “All the memories start flooding back and every point you win as a team just makes it all better.”
On Thursday, the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District suspended activities until further notice, effectively ending the volleyball season.
