FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - The Alaska Nanooks volleyball program has only one libero on their roster, and that libero brings championship experience to the Golden Heart City. Dani Dodge is one of the 2020 recruiting class coming to the Nooks after spending two seasons with the Coffeyville Red Ravens in the National Junior College Athletic Association.

“I was just super excited that coach [Brian Scott] reached out to me and I could find this place,” said Dani Dodge on joining the Alaska Nanooks. “I’ve enjoyed it so fart and I’m ready to take the next step.”

In the past two seasons the junior transfer posted 1,125 digs and 60 aces for the Red Ravens. In 2018, Dodge helped the Red Ravens to a national championship. In her sophomore season Dodge averaged 5.03 digs which would put her in the top three of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. Dodge joins a Nanooks squad that has been on an upswing under Head Coach Brian Scott.

Since Coach Scott took over the Nanooks in 2015, the program has gone from winning six games in the GNAC to 12 last season. Dodge’s arrival could mean a bolster in defense for the Nanooks who ranked seventh last season at 15.19 per set.

“Great, I love them,” said Dodge about Coach Scott and Assistant Coach Meagan Woods. “They’re awesome, great coaches. I’ve learned a lot from just being here in one semester.”

The volleyball season for the National Collegiate Athletic Association was cancelled due to concerns over the coronavirus. The GNAC announced earlier this year that they will explore options to have a conference only season in January. With that, the NCAA also announced that student-athletes will not lose a year of eligibility.

“We’ll see where our season goes and I’m excited for that.” said Dodge.

University of Alaska Fairbanks Chancellor announced on November 13 that the Nanooks will opt-in to participate in winter-collegiate athletics. This came after the GNAC announced their plans for men’s and women’s basketball in January.
