Fairbanks North Star Borough launches new website
FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - The Fairbanks North Star Borough has developed a new website, changing their official domain from fnsb.us to fnsb.gov.
The new website, first conceived around the end of 2018, officially launched on Monday, November 30.
However, an unfinished version of the website was made available to the public last week.
Borough Chief of Staff Jim Williams explained that the old website “didn’t render well on mobile devices. It worked better on tablets but it was terrible on mobile devices.”
Furthermore, Williams said, fnsb.us was not compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act. “None of the content was formatted in a manner where folks with disabilities could access the content.”
He said, “It’s not good enough just to put a picture on the webpage. You have to embed some other source code with that picture so that a commercial reader that would attach -- like a tool that a person with a seeing disability could actually have that content read to them so they could get a description of what that content was. We didn’t have that on our last webpage. We do now.”
According to Williams, the site still needs work. “We’re not totally done yet, but it’s good enough to deploy. We’ve got little things we need to tidy up on,” Williams said, adding, “Like with any webpage, it’s really never done. You’re always adding and deleting and pulling things in and out. But we have the guts of it in place right now, and it’s functional, and we’re just going to move forward and continue to improve.
The borough is encouraging feedback from the community about the new website. Comments can be made by dialing (907) 459-1304 or by emailing Public Information Officer Lanien Livingston at Lanien.Livingston@fnsb.gov.
