University of Alaska Fairbanks ski trails provide safe outdoor activity
FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - With cold weather and the COVID-19 pandemic keeping people cooped up indoors, we take a look at some fun and safe wintertime activities to take advantage of our brief hours of northern sunlight.
The University of Alaska Fairbanks features an extensive series of free-to-use ski trails that can accommodate any level of proficiency — from the flatter beginner-friendly trails of Smith Lake, to hill ridden trails for more experienced skiers, as well as trails for walking and snowshoe use. The trails receive regular upkeep and maintenance from Trail Manager Jason Garron.
“It’s a great free opportunity to get outside and recreate. I just ran into a guy yesterday and I stopped to chat to him while he was out skiing, and the first words out of his mouth were, ‘this is a great COVID-free place!’ It’s easy to socially distance and enjoy some fresh air and sunshine when it’s out,” said Garron
