FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - Many are looking for a fresh start in the New Year and one race believes they are offering just that with the Run Into 2021 event. For what will technically be the first event of 2021, the race will begin at 12:00 a.m. January 1 at Frosty Feet Running Company, with sign-ups starting 30 minutes prior. From the specialized running shoe store on Old Chena Pump Road, participants will head passed the Water Wagon, Chena Spur, around Chena Ridge and back to the store for a 1-mile loop.

“I just wanted to get something new going into 2021, a fresh start for everyone,” said Stacy Fisk, race organizer and owner of Frosty Feet Running Company. “Just very basic, very simple, nothing wild being at that time [of night].”

The event is free to enter and reflected gear is required. Frosty Feet Running Company, which opened earlier this year, will be open as well with masks mandatory while inside the store.

Fisk has organized the Equinox Marathon in recent years, known as one of the toughest marathons in the world. Many races have been canceled throughout the year, including the Equinox and a New Year’s Eve run hosted by Running Club North that was also scheduled for midnight on the first day of 2021. As the pandemic continues and Fairbanks residents attempt to overcome the lack of daylight, Fisk understands the importance of being active.

“I just think for the mental standpoint for individuals as well, I think that is very important, especially this time of year,” she said. “Not just because of COVID, but just darkness and cold, January and February are the toughest months for us.”

For those looking for an alternative to fireworks and champagne, the Run Into 2021 has you covered. More details can be found on the Running Club North calendar.
