City of Fairbanks collects used Christmas trees through January
FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - The City of Fairbanks Department of Public Works is currently collecting used Christmas trees for disposal every Thursday during the month of January.
Those wishing to have their tree picked up can contact the department to schedule a Thursday to do so. In addition, when the department’s crew is collecting garbage, trees that they notice placed next to trash bins will be called in for pickup.
According to Sean Rice, Labor Foreman with the department, those seeking to have their tree removed must live within the city limits.
Rice said the department began delegating Thursdays for this collection about 5 years ago. “We did this because as we were collecting our regular garbage collection, we were noticing that whenever we were collecting Christmas trees, that it would plug up our trucks and we weren’t able to pack enough garbage in the trucks, so we made extra trips to the landfill. So in order to alleviate that, what we started doing was just started making Christmas tree runs on a Thursday.”
Rice counted a little over 200 trees collected last year.
Hours of operation for the department are 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, “so within that timeframe we’ll be able to come by and collect your tree for you,” Rice said.
Those interested in having their old tree taken away can reach the Department of Public Works at (907) 459-6770.
