FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - The Fairbanks North Star Borough has provided an update on the status of renovations to the Mary Siah Recreation Center, long a point of contention between the borough and concerned citizens.

In a press release on January 20th, the borough revealed that the building, which was first closed for renovation on March 1st of last year, will remain closed until at least April 4th, 2021.

Because the building’s design was not altered, COVID-19 social distancing precautions will limit the facility’s accommodations once it reopens.

Borough Chief of Staff Jim Williams explained the steps remaining before opening the center, saying, “Right now I’ve got staff working on our mitigation plan, our COVID mitigation plan, and how opening the Mary Siah pool up, what that looks like under a COVID environment, so right now no decisions have been made about when we’re going to open, but we’ve got to do that work first.”

According to the press release, the decision of when to reopen the facility will be re-evaluated in March.

Meanwhile, the Hamme Pool is currently open, offering many of the same services as Mary Siah would have had.
