Alaska National Guard promotes general from Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta
FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - The Alaska National Guard now has a general from the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta.
In a ceremony on February 7th, Wayne Don was promoted to the rank of brigadier general, making him the highest ranking Alaska Native individual currently serving in the state’s national guard.
Members of the general’s family were able to attend the ceremony.
Don explained that when he joined the service, he did not set out to achieve the rank being bestowed upon him.
“That’s not to suggest I had no ambition about moving forward and achieving a certain professional accomplishment, but to say, for my hero, President Lincoln, who said, ‘Whatever you do, do it well.’ And so that’s what I’ve aspired to do. I’ve aspired to be good at my craft, learn as much as I could possibly learn, leave the organization a little better than I found it, and that’s been my primary focus since day one,” he said.
