Fairbanks long standing eatery Sam’s Sourdough Cafe reopens
FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - After months of quiet throughout the pandemic, the longtime Fairbanks restaurant Sam’s Sourdough Cafe has reopened.
Sam’s Sourdough Cafe, or Sourdough Sam’s, has been a fixture of Fairbanks since it opened in 1987. William Nault, owner of Sourdough Sam’s closed the cafe’s doors after suffering a leg injury, and losing his wife Patricia John who passed away last July. The cafe has been closed for an elongated period of time once before due to a fire in 2012. Now Sam’s is once again open for business, confronting the further challenges of maintaining a restaurant amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.
Nault told us, “Yeah Sam’s is back, and we’ll just do what we can. Sam is my dad - and we opened it, family ran. I’m the last one standing. It’s different. Nothing’s the same since this pandemic hit. Nobody’s leaving their house anymore. I’m sure everybody’s struggling compared to what they used to have, but everybody is just pushing along. That’s what the trick is - just keep pushing until this pandemic goes away. We’re all excited, you know, to be back. It’s gonna come back slowly, but we’re gonna make it.”
