Pet of the Week: Roxanne the fluffy Chow Chow
FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - It’s time to meet Roxanne, the fluffy Chow Chow looking for a new forever home.
Here’s what Britley Calkins, an animal handler with Fairbanks North Star Borough Animal Shelter, had to say about our Pet of the Week:
“Hi I’m Britley and today I’d like to introduce you all to Roxanne. Roxanne is a four year old Chow Chow. For starters, if you’ve never owned this breed before we highly recommend doing some research before scheduling an appointment.
Roxanne came to the shelter because the owners didn’t feel they were the best fit for her. Roxanne enjoys being the only dog and really the only animal in the household. We are requiring that Roxanne goes to a home without cats. She has a higher prey drive and she really just likes to be the little princess that she is. Roxanne is pretty wary of strangers and new people, so just letting her get to know you on her own terms is the best way to approach Miss Roxanne.
Roxanne prefers women over men. She’s said to do well with children but because of her uneasiness around strangers, we are asking that she goes to a home without children under 12 just to make it a more comfortable living arrangement for Miss Roxanne. Roxanne knows a few basic commands such as “sit” and “come” and she’s familiar with her name. But as Chows are, she chooses when she wants to listen. So Roxanne would benefit from a basic obedience class and really just to bond with her new owner.
Roxanne does like treats, although she does appear to have allergies and should be on a hypoallergenic diet. This is something that you might want to discuss further with your vet as well. Chow’s do require a lot of grooming because they have a double coat. So this is something that you’ll have to pay attention to as well for her to live her best, happiest life.
Roxanne’s a sweet girl once you get to know her and once she gets to warm up to you. If you’re looking to add this girl to your family or you’re interested in meeting any of the other animals that we have here at the shelter, such as rabbits or ducklings, please give the shelter a call.”
