Whitman Service Area holding election to raise tax cap
FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - Starting Monday, February 22nd, residents of the Whitman Service Area will be able to vote in-person on a revision of the area’s tax cap.
The change, under Ordinance 2021 - 02, is the only item up for a vote in the Fairbanks North Star Borough’s March Service Area Elections schedule.
The vote will decide whether residents of the area allow their tax cap to be increased $5460 in order to fund road maintenance and capital construction services.
According to Borough Clerk April Trickey, notices about the election have been sent out to all 24 property owners in the area.
Trickey explained that in addition to voting in-person at the Juanita Helms Administrative Center, voters can fill out an online application requesting a mail-in or electronic ballot.
The voting period for this ordinance ends on March 23rd.
If it passes, the Whitman area’s tax cap adjustment is then certified by the Borough Assembly. It would then take effect at the start of the 2021-2022 fiscal year.
More information about the election can be found on the borough’s website.
