FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - A winter weather system is bringing warmer temperatures and snow to the interior of Alaska, but the weather is also bringing bad driving conditions.

On Friday afternoon the Fairbanks Police Department (FPD) sent out a NIXLE warning drivers of deteriorating road conditions in the Fairbanks area. The message came after another alert asking drivers to avoid part of the Johansen Expressway due to an automobile accident. The road has since been cleared but both FPD and the Alaska State Troopers are reporting multiple auto accidents around Fairbanks.

Timothy Miller is an Alaska State Trooper, and says that there are ways for drivers to stay safe if they need to be out on the roads.

“With the road conditions deteriorating and the decreased visibility it would be a good idea to leave with extra time to arrive at your destination, also drive everywhere with your lights on, and be cautious and give extra space between you and other vehicles on the road,” Miller said.

A winter weather advisory is in effect until early Sunday morning with additional snow expected throughout the night and into Saturday.
