Flooding leaves Fairbanks neighborhood nearly inaccessible
FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - A Fairbanks neighborhood off of Steele Creek Road is dealing with flooding that has left residents unable to access their homes. The Spudwood Road neighborhood is experiencing it’s worst spring flooding ever as water has become trapped by snowbanks and is freezing on the road.
Residents of the area said that they are having to walk to their houses and carry their groceries home. One resident told us that the problem has been around for a few years but this is the worse they have seen it.
The Steese Volunteer Fire Department, which services the area said that they would not be able to get to a call on the road as the road is nearly impossible to drive over.
Tim Manning owns property on the road and is currently trying to build a house past the flooded area. He said that the water is between 12 and 18 inches deep but it is the ice chunks that are causing the biggest problem.
Manning said he doesn’t know if he will be able to keep working on the house, “I have a brand new construction house, I would really like to live in it, I am trying to move into it right now.”
We reached out to the road service area commissioner for a comment on the story but have yet to hear back. We will continue to follow the situation as it develops.
