Eielson slated to receive four additional KC-135 tankers in 2023
FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - Eielson Air Force Base is slated to receive four new KC-135 refueling tankers in the coming years. The announcement was made Friday by US Senators Dan Sullivan and Lisa Murkowski, and Congressman Don Young.
According to a press release from Sullivan’s office, the plan is to add an active duty component to the existing squadron of National Guard tankers.
The new aircraft will bring the total number of tankers at Eielson to 12. The tankers will also bring an additional 220 active duty personnel and their families to the base. This comes in addition to the nearly 1,300 military personnel brought to the base with two squadrons of F-35s stationed at the base.
Sullivan says this is significant for our economy and national security.
“Securing our national security interests in the Arctic. Good for the economy, but also good for what’s really important in terms of a growing area of great power competition. China, Russia are in the Arctic, we need to be able to defend our interests, our fishermen, our waterways, our environment, and with this build up it’s going to happen,” Sullivan said.
The aircraft are scheduled to be arrive in 2023 pending the outcome of the required environmental impact analysis.
