Final selection for new Fairbanks school district superintendent begins
FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - With the imminent retirement of long time school district superintendent Dr. Karen Gaborik, the Fairbanks North Star Borough Board of Education has refined the search for a new superintendent of schools, choosing three finalists out of 14 original applicants.
These finalists will participate in two separate forums for board staff and the Fairbanks community to meet and get to know them.
The three finalists are Dr. Justin Barnes, current Superintendent of Schools in Anaconda, Montana. He has bachelor’s degrees in Kinesiology and History from Texas A&M, a masters in educational leadership from Midwestern University, and a doctorate in Educational Leadership from Northcentral University.
Dr. Vickie Cartwright of Wisconsin is current superintendent of the 11th largest school district in Wisconsin, the Oshkosh Area School District. Her accolades include a Bachelor of Music Education from the Univ. of Florida, an M.S. in Music Education, an E.Ds. in Educational Leadership, and a Ph.D. in Educational Administration and Supervision from the Univ. of Southern Mississippi.
And lastly Dr. Corey Weiss is the current Special Programs Director for the Copper River School District here in Alaska. Dr. Weiss has a Doctor of Education in Transformational Leadership from Concordia University, a Masters of Education in Educational Leadership from West Texas A&M University, and a B.A. in Political Science and History from Texas Tech University.
Tuesday’s forum is reserved for board staff; however families, students, and community members are invited to attend the follow-up forum this Wednesday at 5:30 via Zoom.
