Lathrop topples West Valley in first high school wrestling match of the year
FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - Fairbanks-area wrestlers have been craving to get back on the mat since December 2019 - the conclusion of the high school state wrestling tournament. Typically a fall sport, the season was moved to the spring to allow enough time for COVID mitigation plans to be put into place, which include testing 72 hours prior to competition. While it is not traditionally a spring sport, wrestlers from Lathrop and West Valley ignited the start of the spring sports season with a head-to-head match on the mats of the Joe T. Court.
Lathrop continues to field strong numbers and strong grapplers, as the girl’s program placed runner-up and the boy’s took third at state the last time they took to the mats. As for West Valley, their numbers were significantly smaller than in years past, forfeiting 14 matches, with a total of 17 forfeits taking place Wednesday night. The Malemutes won each of the seven official matches that were scored, while several exhibitions that were not counted took place afterward.
