Pet of the Week: Imbix the hamster and her gaggle of siblings
FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - It’s time to meet Imbix and her horde of hamster siblings!
Here’s what Britley Calkins, an animal handler with Fairbanks North Star Borough Animal Shelter, had to say:
“I’d like to introduce you all to a few of my little friends including Imbix who is a three-and-a-half-week-old hamster. She came in with a lot of other hamsters ranging from three and a half weeks to six weeks old.
She is a sweet little hamster. If you have not owned hamsters before, we do recommend doing some research on these little critters before adopting. They are nocturnal, so they are up all night scurrying around their enclosure making noise, and then they like to sleep during the day.
Since these little ones are so young, we definitely recommend handling them and socializing them at the appropriate times, which is usually later at night for them, so they get used to the human contact. They have very healthy little appetites currently. They are drinking well out of little water bottles.
Even though we have them housed together, they do like to have their own enclosure. As they get older, they can begin fighting with each other. So, if you do plan on adopting multiple, please just have multiple cages set up as well. They are very sweet, they are very small right now, and again they are just looking for their own homes.
If you’re interested in adopting, we have hamsters, we have mice, we have bunnies, dogs, and kitties here at the shelter, all looking for their new forever home!”
