FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - Congressman Don Young has indicated his support of Puerto Rican statehood.

At a legislative hearing on Wednesday, members of congress discussed the political status of the American territory, including two bills being heard by the House of Representatives: the Puerto Rico Statehood Admission Act, and the Puerto Rico Self-Determination Act of 2021.

Young testified about the legislative history behind the move for statehood and what he sees as assumptions about the territory’s political leanings.

“The people have spoken, let’s have the vote, let’s become a state, a 51st state - and although I have some opposition on my side about ‘they’ll all be Democrat,’ they said the same thing about Alaska and now we’re all Republicans. So everybody has a right to decide what they’re going to be, but don’t pre-think what they’re going to be because it doesn’t work out that way,” Young said.
