West Valley finishes runner-up, Delta places 3rd at Rally in the Valley Softball Tournament
FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - While Fairbanks-area high schools have not been able to practice on an outdoor field yet, many were thrown on to the diamond for the first time this season at the Rally in the Valley Softball Tournament hosted by Colony High School in the Matanuska-Susitna Borough this past weekend.
With each of West Valley, Delta, North Pole and Monroe getting a guaranteed four games over three days, it was a great tune up before competition begins in Fairbanks this week.
West Valley began the tournament Thursday by steam rolling Wasilla 20-4, before defeating North Pole the following day 9-4. Game two on Friday saw West Valley taking care of business against Palmer 7-1, setting them up with the host Knights for the championship game. Colony overpowered the Wolfpack 10-0 in the title game, proving to be the best team in the tournament.
It was a solid first weekend for Delta’s Division II program competing in the mostly Division I tourney, bouncing back after their tournament-opening loss to Colony 12-4. The Huskies took down Wasilla 14-3 on Friday, before edging Palmer 9-8 the same day. Delta left the Mat-Su on a high note with a 16-4 win over Homer for third place.
North Pole claimed three victories for fourth place on the weekend, ignited by a 20-0 win over the Monroe Catholic Rams. After falling to the Wolfpack, the Patriots responded with a 8-3 win over Wasilla later in the day. On Saturday, they defeated Palmer in a tight 6-5 contest. Wasilla placed fifth, Homer sixth and Palmer seventh, while the Rams were unable to pick up a win on the weekend - but will have a chance to get their first victory later this week.
Monroe will take on Lathrop Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. South Davis Fields Complex Field #3 - where all the games will be played this week as the only softball field in Fairbanks ready to field competition.
Before that, West Valley and North Pole will square-off in a double-header Tuesday at 5:30 and 7:15, while the Malemutes face Delta at 5:30 Wednesday.
Later this week, West Valley and Lathrop will travel to the Mat-Su Valley- as the Wolfpack return from last weekend and Lathrop heads down there for the first time - with games scheduled Friday and Saturday.
