FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - The Fairbanks North Star Borough School District decided in January of 2020 not to renew their long term contract with the school bus transportation provider First Student Inc., ultimately awarding the contract to Durham School Services.

Without this contract, First Student has no further business interest in their Fairbanks and North Pole facilities, and expects them to experience a mass layoff. As many as 185 First Student employees may be subject to this layoff, and have already been notified by First Student.

According to First Student spokesman Chris Kemper the busses will be repurposed and moved. “Depending on the age and condition of the busses, we’ll refresh them, continue with their maintenance program, and perhaps move them to other locations nearby.”

The exact date of the layoff has not been determined, though it is expected to occur around June 30, 2021 when the contract expires.
