Fairbanks deadline to remove studded tires is May 15th
FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) -The deadline for removing studied tires was adjusted this year from May 1 to May 15 in an executive order from the Alaska Department of Public Safety, aiming to give people more time to comply. On May 15 all vehicles operating in Fairbanks, and those of all Alaskans living above the 60 North Latitude line, will be required to remove any studded tires and replace them with their springtime counterparts. Jim Tewalt, store manager at American Tire and Auto provided comment on the reasons for making sure all studded tires are removed by the deadline.
“The legal side of things for one. It can be a hefty ticket, the police are a little bit more lenient this time of year than they would be in the middle of summer time. And then get them off so you don’t wear the studs any more than you really have to,” said Tewalt.
Removing studded tires protects the tires themselves, it also protects Alaska’s roads from unnecessary damage, and protects drivers from a ticket.
