National Rescue Dog Day: How can the Fairbanks community help man’s best friend?
FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - May 20th is National Rescue Dog Day and there are plenty of ways for the Fairbanks community to help man’s best friend.
According to Kimberly Imbert, Animal Shelter Operations Supervisor with Fairbanks North Star Borough Animal Shelter, this day comes at the perfect time for Fairbanks.
Imbert explained, “It’s National Rescue Dog Day and we’re really excited at the Fairbanks North Star Borough Animal Control about this day because we have a lot of rescue dogs looking for their forever homes. A lot of people I’m sure have found our new adoption system with COVID kind of interesting, and we haven’t had a lot of animals available at the same time because they are moving through our shelter so quickly. But currently we have a lot of rescue dogs looking for loving homes, and now that it’s summer we’re getting more stray animals in and a lot of people seem to be moving. So we’re getting a lot of people with life changes who can’t bring their pets with them, and we just have a lot of options if you’re looking to add a new family member.”
If adoption is not in the cards, there are other ways to help our furry friends, though due to COVID-19 some may be limited at this time.
Imbert said, “We know that a lot of people who are animal lovers can’t always have animals just because of how life goes and different life situations, and because of that we want everyone to know that adoption isn’t the only way that you can help our shelter pets. We also have a volunteer and a foster program that really highly benefit our animals that you can reach out to us and ask about. Our volunteer program has really had to be toned down a lot because of COVID and just social distancing requirements.”
However, according to Imbert there are more ways to help despite the limitations on volunteering. “We often need newspapers folded, which we use for puppy kennels so our little puppies can be clean, and we can always use different supplies. The best way to find out what we mostly need is to call and see what our needs are at that time. It just changes depending on what we’ve been getting recently and what kind of things we’ve been using, which varies with the seasons and which animals we have.”
