FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - The Fairbanks Police Department has announced a winner in it’s contest for a new police vehicle’s graphics design. Ryder Snow’s design featuring mountains, and the northern lights, with a golden heart, won the contest. Chief Ron Dupee said that they had the contest to get the community involved.

“We wanted to change up the graphics and make the community part of deciding what goes on those graphics, so we asked for people to submit their designs and we took designs, we whittled them down and the officers have voted and we’ve come up with a finalist,” Dupee said.

The department ran the contest in April and according to Dupee received over 20 entries. FPD selected the top four designs and then had officers vote on their favorite.

Snow said the reason he decided to enter was because, “It’s not every day you get to design a police car, and I like living Fairbanks and love being here so it would be nice to help the community and produce a cool design for our police officers.”

Snow said he has been doing art for a while, but only recently started doing graphic design.

“I started getting into it during quarantine to pass time and began to fall in love with it and have been doing it ever since,” He said.

When he first started to work on the the graphics he said he thought of the things that would remind him of Fairbanks.

“The mountains, and the northern lights of course because that is just a statement of Alaska, and then incorporating the golden heart city and everything that Fairbanks is,” Snow said.

Since he is self taught and still learning, he said there were times he had to use YouTube to help him in figuring out how to incorporate his design.

Snow said he never expected to win, “I just submitted it to get my name out there, just to chance and always to find a way to improve in graphic design. To win was a complete surprise and I am just happy I got the chance.”

Dupee said the design was just what they were looking for, “By far the officers liked that design the best. It really sticks out and it really pops and I think it is going to be a really unique design on a patrol car.”

Ryker is planning to go to college later this year and continue studying graphic design.

Dupee said that the first two vehicles featuring the new graphics should be on the roads by the end of June and they are hoping to have six total cars with the new design by the end of the year.
