Nanooks Men’s Basketball hosts youth skills camp
FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - As most athletes know, there is no offseason - especially when it comes to skill development. The University of Men’s Basketball program opened a summer full of youth camps hosted by the Athletic Department with a three-day training session for local boys and girls from grades 4-9 at their home gym of the UAF Patty Center. The camp was instructed by coaches Greg Sparling and Jesse Brown, as well as current players who are ready to return to the court for the 2021-22 season.
“One thing I always talk about my student-athletes is always give back, because someone has helped you along the way,” Sparling said of his the importance of his players’ involvement in the community. “I mean even if you’re teaching a kid how to dribble right handed or left handed or a jump shot or whatever, just giving back what you have learned throughout your career.
It is good for them to get out there and you know they are seen as role models, and so hopefully a lot of these kids will come back to our games and our guys will recognize them and high five them and we will build that base, he added. “We are going to keep building on this and we are going to send the local youth back with some skills we taught them throughout the week.”
