Fairbanks fish hatchery plans to release 400k fish this season throughout Interior Alaska
FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - The Ruth Burnett Sport Fish Hatchery plans on releasing over 400,000 fish for this year’s fishing season across the Interior.
According to the Ruth Burnett Sport Fish Hatchery manager, Travis Hyer, the total includes various species like Arctic Char, Rainbow Trout, Lake Trout, King Salmon, and Silver Salmon.
“Our total production is primarily made of rainbow trout, but facility-wide in 2021 we’re going to release about 420,000 fish into the area lakes,” Hyer said. “That varies a little bit from year to year, but on average we’re in that 400,000 to 450,000 fish per year.”
And for those avid anglers out there who look forward to the season every year, Hyer explained that every license and piece of sportfishing gear purchase goes towards ensuring more fish being stocked the next year.
“The funding for this facility is all user-generated,” Hyer added. “We are funded by license sales and a federal excise tax on sportfishing gear. So it is a user-pay, user-benefit system which is a convenient way of going. If you fish and enjoy angling, then do that. We encourage everybody to go out and enjoy the fisheries that they help produce.”
